What is Quizbowl?
Quizbowl is a well known university wide game
that tests an individual's general knowledge on topics such as
medicine, computers, history, literature, and art, which are just
some of the categories you'll encounter. You may be surprised at how
much fun you'll have and how much you'll LEARN, or even how much you
already KNOW. Quizbowl will not only satisfy your trivial needs, but
will serve as an atmosphere for you to get to know one another in
the club.
Every year, quizbowl teams from all around the province host tournaments
at their campus. Last year, we saw teams such as UofT, Queens, and Western.
We expect the number of teams this year to double, as more and more students
are introduced to quizbowl.
Tournaments
McMaster is scheduled to host a VETO (Vancouver
Estival Trivia Open) Mirror of a tournament that is originally taking
place in British Columbia. VETO questions are generally written to
incorporate a wide spectrum of knowledge. This tournament is open to
all players, and there is no cost to participate. On the same day that VETO
takes place, there is a tournament called TRASH, which deals with popular
culture subjects. There may be questions that deal from Britney Spears, to
Arnold Schwarznegger, or even David Letterman. TRASH is also free of charge.
Where does my $4 membership fee go?
Due to the rising price of tuition, we are attempting
to make quizbowl as affordable as possible. You may ask, why would Quizbowl
need money? Well, it starts off by paying for the buzzer systems, which run
anywhere from $350 to $1000. Part of the $5 will also fund the question
packets. The questions used in the weekly meetings are purchased from the
NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournament) Association. These are official
question packets that are used in tournaments. The price of these questions
are sold in clusters of 20, which run for about $80. Be not worried that
your money is not for our pleasure, but for the general welfare and status
of the club. Our club is run from the people who participate in it, and
the excitement that it stimulates.
